High School Guidance Counselor


As a member of a multidisciplinary staff, a counselor is to provide a comprehensive guidance program for students in grades 9-12. The counselor provides activities to meet the needs of their assigned caseload, consults with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students and provides support to other high school education programs.



  1. Meets all requirement for Guidance Counselors per the State of Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  2. Current knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  3. Knowledge of how to access community and educational resources.
  4. Aptitude for working effectively as member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  5. Must be a team player and a self-starter.
  6. Ability to work well with diverse populations.
  7. Must possess a high degree of independence, flexibility, self-motivation, and creativity.
  8. Possess or willing to obtain CPR and First Aid Certifications within first three months of employment.
  9. Ability to organize and supervise youth in a safe environment.
  10. Computer and training experience preferred.
  11. Excellent interpersonal skill both in person and by phone.
  12. Exemplary organizational, planning, and multi-tasking skills.
  13. Competently manages, networks with, and motivates students, staff, and volunteers.
  14. Ability to maintain confidential information.
  15. Resourcefulness to organize and maintain detailed records, complete necessary paperwork, and meet deadlines.
  16. Skilled in handling high work volume, prioritizing urgent issues, and remaining focused on full scope tasks.



  1. Implement the high school guidance curriculum.
  2. Guide and counsel groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans.
  3. Counsel small groups and individual students with problems.
  4. Consult with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students.
  5. Refer students with significant needs to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parents.
  6. Participate in, coordinate, or conduct activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school.
  7. Evaluate and revise the building guidance program.
  8. Pursue professional growth.
